NBS in freshwater managment DK-CN collaboration
Date
30. APR 2026
Location
Online 08:30–11:30 CEST (Denmark) / 14:30–17:30 CST (China)
This online workshop explores the implementation of nature-based solutions in two freshwater systems in China.
By bringing together Danish and Chinese partners, the session focuses on identifying relevant solutions, technologies, and collaboration opportunities to move from knowledge to implementation.
From knowledge to action
The workshop is part of the project Nature-Based Solutions for Freshwater Management, focusing on biodiversity, water quality, and ecosystem services across freshwater systems.
The session will:
- Provide insights on the Chinese freshwater systems and challenges
- Discuss relevant nature-based solutions
- Strengthen collaboration between Danish and Chinese partners
Two freshwater cases in China
The workshop focuses on two cases that serve as testbeds for developing and prioritising solutions.
Miyun reservoirs (Beijing)
Miyun Reservoir is a key source of drinking water for Beijing and an important habitat for migratory birds. Rising water levels have reduced shoreline habitats.
A recent project established constructed wetlands in the Chaohe River delta, increasing aquatic biodiversity. The next step is to scale and standardize habitat restoration as a nature-based solution.
Baoxing catchment (Sichuan)
The Baoxing catchment is rich in biodiversity but under pressure from hydropower, mining, infrastructure, and agricultural runoff.
Connected to the Giant Panda National Park, the area holds national importance. Local stakeholders aim to expand the use of nature-based solutions to strengthen ecosystem health while maintaining functions such as flood protection.
Workshop program (online)
- 08:30 – Welcome and introduction (Clean)
- 08:45 – Introduction to nature-based solutions (Aarhus University)
- 09:00 – Case 1: Miyun and Guanting reservoirs (RCEES, CAS)
- 09:25 – Case 2: Baoxing catchment (SCAES, CAS)
- 10:00 – Participant presentations and solution pitches
- 10:45 – Open discussion and Q&A
- 11:25 – Closing and next steps
Participants are invited to present solutions, technologies, and ideas relevant to the cases.
Get involved
Are you a company, utility, municipality, or knowledge institution working with nature-based solutions, freshwater management, or biodiversity already working in China or planning to work in China?
You are invited to contribute with knowledge, technologies, and perspectives to the workshop and the broader collaboration. Mark in the sign-up form if you would be interested in contributing with a 5-7min presentation.
Funding
The project is funded by the Global Innovation Network Program (GINP) under the Danish Agency for Higher Education and Science.
